AILSA RICHARDS
Garden Design

A sunny village house that needed the gardens to shine through its large crittal and bay windows. Transformed from a raised paddock, we had to take the bold step of digging down into the existing garden to create a walled courtyard and connect the outdoor terraces.

We used the height difference to create raised beds and wrapped the courtyard in planting. It became a place for outdoor parties and doubled up as parking, and linked to the generous entertaining terrace at the rear. Here guests could spill out from the dining room, and be immersed by the planting in further raised beds before venturing up the wide steps to the pergola, through the cut flower beds and into the wilderness garden beyond.

This entire garden was planted for year round interest so that the seasonal shifts in the colours and texture of the layers of planting could be seen through every window in the house.
