AILSA RICHARDS
Garden Design

Teddington,
London
A family home that needed to be connected to its garden which was hidden behind a tall wall so had no direct access, and was on a much higher level.
Starting by dividing the garden in two I created a shadier wilderness play area with a tree house and naturalised planting, and a layered sunny courtyard for morning coffee and family bbqs, complete with cascading water feature. I linked this courtyard garden directly with the house then by knocking down the tall dividing wall & turning it into planted terraces either side of wide steps.
The whole garden is designed to immerse the clients in tiers of planting, from the trees, hedges and retaining walls to the raised beds, ground level beds & finally the terraces that lead down to the double doors of the kitchen/living space. Herbs and edible plants were incorporated into the general planting palette.
